Tripping on ‘Kili Poyi’

Talk of marijuana high and here is a movie that you can ‘trip’ on! ‘Kili Poyi’ might not have been lauded by critics or the film fraternity. But if you are looking for pure entertainment, ‘Kili Poyi’ sets the ball rolling. Chacko and Hari are confused youngsters (not that they want to make any improvement to that condition!), who works with an advertising agency in Bangalore. They eat, sleep and breathe marijuana, which says it all! The movie starts off by showing a bag containing cocaine, which is to reach its destination in Goa, but takes a miss. Thanks to Chacko and Hari and a series of mishaps. 

So here is how it all starts- the duo decides to take a break from Bangalore chaos and office mayhem. Their trip to Manali gets cancelled as the douchebags end up missing their flight due to a ‘high’. They later end up in Goa. Lots of booze, weed, girls, and party are what the duo is looking out for while holidaying. Chacko meets Racheal, and manages to end up in a one night stand while Hari gets his share of fun too. After a night of drama and fun-filled events, they end up back home in Bangalore and that is when this new unknown bag strikes their attention. It managed to end up with them last night! They open the bag to find stacks of cocaine. Well, the journey begins from then on! They are perplexed, confused and clueless to what needs to be done with it. Hence follows mainstream drama. (oh! Not to miss that sexy sling bag which is equally a protagonist in the movie). 

‘Kili Poyi’ can boast of newbies in the house Sandra Thomas, Samata Agrarwal and Sabreen Baker. The ladies have done their bit, surely making it look stylish. No other duo could’ve made Chacko and Hari complete like how Asif Ali and Aju Varghese has put forth. Not to mention the style in which they carried off the ‘new generation boys’! The art director needs a special applause. One can witness vintage movie posters ruling the scenes. Raveendran, Malayalam’s disco trend setter makes a comeback by doing what he does best, as Disco Douglas. 

Hat’s off to debutant Vinay Govind. His directorial venture, which is first of its kind in Indian Cinema, (yeah stoner genre!), hasn’t failed to impress. Scriptwriters Vivek Ranjit and Joseph Kurian looks promising! Not to forget the direction of photography by Pradheesh Varma who has done a trippy job. A venture of newcomers who made their debut, ‘Kili Poyi’ is the first stoner genre in Indian Cinema. It is truly a daring attempt by a group of bold young men. High time, Malayalam cinema started experimenting with genres and themes. 

No wonder the movie was rated ‘A’. So if you don’t support cannabis usage (or whether you smoke it yourself!) doesn’t make any difference to the way you must view this cinema. Keep aside marijuana and look at it as pure entertainment. Well, this is a break from the clichéd drama you are tired of seeing on the silver screen every now and then!
